| 62 | 1658, February 5: Mary, daughter of Humphrey and Mary (Wales) Atherton was married to William Billings at Dorchester, Massachusetts. "History of the Town of Stonington, County of New London, Connecticut" by Richard Anson Wheeler; p. 236; Press of The Day Publishing Company; New London, Connecticut; 1900 (974.62 S87Wl LAPL) 1658, February 12: Mary, daughter of Humphrey and Mary (Wales) Atherton and William Billing were married and the ceremony was presided over by Major Atherton. "William Billing of Stonington, Connecticut" compiled by Perry Streeter from an article in the "NEHGS Register" by Reverend Creighton Spencer-Mounsey; Jane Fletcher Fiske, editor; New England Historic Genealogical Society; Boston, Massachusetts; April 1927 (974.0 NEa SCGS) (974.42 R68Ro LAPL) Marriage Note: Several sources have shown the wife of William to have been Mary Atherton, daughter of Major Humphrey Atherton, probably due to the fact that they were married by Major Atherton, but this is not proven and, to the contrary, this researcher has found information indicating the opposite, such as the marriage of Mary Atherton, daughter of Major Humphrey Atherton, married to Joseph Weeks on April 9, 1667. This is during the time she would have been married to William Billing(s), and it is unlikely that Major Atherton had two daughters named Mary that lived to adulthood. Also see Records of the Proprietors of the Narragansett, otherwise called "The Fones Record, Rhode Island Colonial Gleanings" by James N. Arnold, ed. of the Narragansett Historical Register, Compiled Vital Records of Rhode Island, etc., in which the various land dealings (also known as the Atherton Purchase) by Major Atherton are detailed. In several of the deed records, Major Atherton's sons and son-in-laws are named, but William Billing(s) is not one of them. In addition, this submitting researcher has found many marriages performed by Major Atherton so that his performance of the ceremony would not, in itself, be a clue. Therefore, this researcher chooses to leave the last name of Mary blank until more conclusive evidence can be found. However, William Billing and Mary (unknown) were married in Dorchester, Massachusetts, in 1658 and Mary's name was blank, whether this is due to illegibility or if the record itself is blank, I do not know. [Research of John Malcomb Billings] (Billing Archives) "An Index to Vital Records of Dorchester, Massachusetts, through 1825" by Sanford Charles Gladden "The Genealogy of Some of the Descendants of William Billing" by Frank Billings; The Lakeside Press of R.R.
